Strengths and Challenges
Every program has it's strengths and challenges, here are a few examples for the preschool program.
Strengths:
Cognitive and Academic Development
- Introducing the Alphabet and Numbers.
- Learning to read and write 2-4 letter words.
- Simple addition using numbers.
Communication Skills
- Encouraging story telling using props.
Social Skills
- Learning to share, turn-taking during play, resolve conflicts with help.
Structure
- Preschools offer a structured and predictable learning environment that helps children prepare for the structure of kindergarden and beyond.
Educators
- Preschools are operated by professionals trained in Early Childhood Education. They can help support learning and identify needs and delays to get additonal supports for the children.
Challenges:
Separation Anxiety
- Children may cry and become sad once parents leave them after drop off.
Socialization
- Some children struggle to socialize, make friends, talk, or even express their feelings.
Behavioural Issues
- Short-temper, tantrums, aggressive behaviour.
Illnesses
- With large groups of children, illnesses can spread easily. This can be mitigated by frequent washing, sanitizing and toy cleaning.
Individualized Supports
- With upwards of a 1:12 ratio it can be hard to provide individualized attention to children with diverse needs.
